In Design Technology and Art, we believe “Creativity is the defeat of habit by originality” (Arthur Koestler). 

Design Technology & Art

Key Stage 3:

At Key Stage 3 students will rotate around the different areas of the faculty and will gain:

  • A working understanding of the creative process and theory of art & design
  • Experience of applying these skills using a full range of materials, media and ingredients in specialist areas such as Food Prep, Textiles, Product Design and Art studios
  • An understanding of art movements, the birth of Modern Art and how to link it to their own ideas
  • An appreciation of ‘Iconic Designers’ and the way they have influenced the world
  • Manufacturing skills, precision and engineering
  • Experience of the application of tone, perspective techniques and drawing skills to produce accurate drawings. They will also learn ‘colours’ including complementary colour and mixing shades and washes
  • An understanding of the social, moral and cultural issues that surround Art and Design
  • Skills in the practice and use of state of the art, industrial standard CAD/CAM equipment
  • A full understanding of safe practice in workshops, kitchens and art studios
  • Knowledge and ability to be able to use subject-specific vocabulary


Extra-curricular opportunities

Our faculty is frequently open out of lessons to students wanting to continue class work or develop work of their own. The students’ work branches out of the faculty and into several exhibition areas around the academy. The faculty takes part in a great deal of external competitions and initiatives.

Our faculty strives to create talented, thoughtful and creative young people. The staff members in our faculty are talented and enthusiastic individuals with a number of years of professional experience, who exhibit their work around the country.
