The overall aim of the MFL department is to produce life-long learners who have a passion for and an understanding of the value of learning a language, as well as developing the four transferrable modalities required to communicate effectively with speakers of other languages.
The Department consists of a highly motivated team that engages students through a wide range of activities and uses ICT to great effect. Through the use of authentic materials such as songs, literature etc, students also enhance their knowledge of other cultures and develop their curiosity. Teachers foster confidence in students in order to educate for Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills. High expectations within all MFL lessons encouraging students to be considerate and show respect for others.
All students in Key Stage 3 study French, with some Gifted and Talented students taking on German as a second language at the start of Year 8. At Key stage 3, students follow the online Studio coursebook covering a number of topics including family, environment, hobbies and school. They have two hours of MFL lessons per week. At the climax of year 9, all students will have developed their knowledge in French and are equipped to make informed choices about whether to continue French at GCSE. They have a clear understanding of why learning a MFL is important to their future work and personal life.
At Key Stage 4, students are encouraged to continue to study MFL as part of the EBacc. Current Year 11 students follow the AQA exam board course which comprises of 4 terminal exams worth 25% each. At KS4, students deepen their appreciation of how words and language come together and further develop their knowledge of words and structures.
