Staff and students from Manor Church of England Academy will host their annual Carol Service at York Minster on Tuesday 4 December.
Featuring readings and performances by the students, the evening will follow a theme of ‘Peace’ in this the centenary year of the armistice agreement. This year, Manor have adopted the format of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols which was created and performed in 1880 by Edward Benson, Bishop of Truro.
The Service was first performed at King’s College in 1918 as a way of the college celebrating the end of the First World War. It is still performed at King’s every Christmas Eve.
The Hope Community Choir will play a leading role once again at the service. Made up of staff, parents, grandparents and friends from the seven Hope Sentamu Learning Trust schools (Manor CE Academy, Vale of York Academy, Barlby High School, Burton Green Primary, Poppleton Ousebank Primary, Forest of Galtres Anglican Methodist Primary and Baldersby St James CE Primary) will perform a featured performance of ‘I am Free.’ Dave Lowe, who is Choirmaster and Head of Music at Manor CE Academy, wrote the song with his wife Miriam, for use at remembrance services to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.
Dave said “Our carol concert in the Minster is always spectacular. Our passionate young musicians and new musical arrangements promise to make this another remarkable and unique occasion and to have the Hope Community Choir involved once again, will make the occasion extra special!
The carol service begins at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7.00om. All are welcome to attend and no tickets are required.
