Rationale

Manor CE Academy is committed to the provision of high-quality education for all students but recognises the need to make additional provision for students who are more able. All students have the right to equality of opportunity; to experience teaching which allows them to move forward in their learning and to be provided with opportunities and appropriate support to meet their individual needs. We are committed to:

• Providing an environment which encourages all students to maximise their potential
• Recognising the needs of more able students both academically and socially
• Ensuring that more able students are motivated to achieve to the best of their ability
• Providing enrichment and enhancement opportunities for more able students
• Communicating effectively with parents and carers

Definition and identification

Able and interested pupils are identified through one of two methods. Firstly, all Year 7 pupils take CATs cognitive ability tests at the beginning of the Autumn term. Any child who scores an average of 120 or above will be placed on the whole-school ‘Able and Interested’ register. Secondly, twice a year all staff will be asked to nominate any pupils who they consider to be especially able in their subject. This is then collated and any pupil who secures five or more recommendations will also be added to the whole-school register.

Manor CE Academy work closely with York Independent State School Partnership (ISSP) who provide a range of excellent opportunities, such as:

• Saturday ‘Masterclasses’ exploring questions such as ‘what is true?’
• Lectures
• GCSE Latin
• GCSE Astronomy
• Trips, such as visits to Oxford University
