MANOR CE ACADEMY IS PART OF

PHSE

The PSHE Curriculum at Manor, including Relationships and Sex Education

As a part of your child’s education at Manor CE Academy, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, strategies and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.

The majority of the PSHE education became statutory in September 2020 under the Children and Social Work Act. The Act introduced compulsory Relationships and Sex Education in secondary school, as well as Health Education (both mental and physical). We also cover important content about careers, economic wellbeing and personal safety.

Our intent at Manor CE Academy is to ensure that our pupils:

‘Serve others, grow together and live life to the full.’
(School vision)

We believe that our Christian foundation influences all that we do, including our PSHE programme. We want each of our young people to be encouraged to develop Christian values, as seen throughout the Bible, to be gracious, compassionate, loyal, patient, kind, forgiving and just, in order to live successfully and safely within our world. Therefore, as a school we are committed to ensuring our pupils can achieve this, by equipping pupils with the tools to do this in school, in their local communities and in the wider world.

PSHE education is currently taught throughout the school through our Live Life Well Programme.

What is our PSHE Programme?

Our PSHE Provision consists of:

  • PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)

  • RSE (Relationships Education and Sex Education)

  • Careers Education

  • Citizenship

We teach this across the following:

  • For an hour a fortnight, as part of the main curriculum for Years 7, 8, 9 and 11.

  • 2 drop down days a year for Years 7-10.

  • Collective Worship

  • Pastoral Assemblies once per half term, and as needs emerge.

  • Form Time Activities, in particular for Year 10.

  • Cross Curricular Activities

All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe and respectful learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values and in-line with the school’s RSE policy

Our Intent

PSHE at Manor Church of England Academy is a developmental programme of learning through which students acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, students develop the qualities and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. Students are equipped to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. The programme contributes to personal development by helping students to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, and to identify and manage risk and make informed choices. It encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic wellbeing as well as providing students with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society as responsible citizens. The PSHE programme also provides opportunities for students to reflect on and clarify their own, and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now, and in the future. Links are made from students’ KS2 learning and developed ready for KS5. Our curriculum responds to the needs of our students within their local context as well as responding to local, national and global issues as they arise throughout the year.

We draw upon resources from a wide range of organisations to ensure our PSHE curriculum is well planned and resourced, to be effective, engaging and age appropriate.  This includes resources from the PSHE Association, and from Goodness & Mercy, which are resources written primarily for Church of England schools, to observe the theology underpinning the curriculum. It is named from the 23rd Psalm:  “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”  Whilst goodness and mercy are gifts, they require cultivating.  All our PSHE resources are used with the aim of helping our young people to understand these gifts; in their relationships with themselves, with others and with future partners, so that they may find and bring  joy, peace and comfort to those relationships. We want each of our young people to be encouraged to develop Christian values, as seen throughout the Bible,  to be gracious, compassionate, loyal, patient, kind, forgiving and just, in order to live successfully and safely within our world.  Therefore as a school we are committed to ensuring our pupils can achieve this, by equipping pupils with the tools to do this in school, in their local communities and in the wider world.

Relationships and Sex Education

To embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Pupils can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. PSHE including Relationships, Health and Sex education can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.

As a school, we are required by law to teach statutory relationships education and health education.
