Taking Hope to Romania

A team of intrepid youngsters from Manor CE Academy have recently returned from a life-changing trip to Romania, where they volunteered with charity Cry in the Dark.

The Young Leaders spent quality time with adults and children with disabilities and learning difficulties, and got stuck in to a bridge-building project to help a local family with a severely disabled daughter.

The students were effusive about their experience, stating it had been the best trip of their lives and that they had learnt so much.

Year 10 student Abbie said “The trip to Romania has been amazing, something I will never forget. I was shocked to see the poor conditions in which some people live, some of them just metres away from very expensive, lavish buildings. The contrast between rich and poor was stark.

“We got involved with building a bridge for a family whose daughter had cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair. When the weather was bad, it was impossible to get her wheelchair through the mud, so she was stuck sometimes for days, in a tiny house. The bridge will give her and her family the freedom to get out and about more. It seems such a simple thing, but it will make a world of difference to them. It was very humbling to be involved in such a project. The whole thing really has been life-changing.”

This trip to Romania is just one example of how the young people in the Hope Sentamu Learning Trust can thrive as caring and engaged citizens.
