In Hope Sentamu Learning Trust schools, high quality and inclusive RS is provided for all pupils in all year groups.

At Manor, RS (Religious Studies) is taught in accordance with the Diocese of York and Leeds RS syllabus and follows the expectations of the Statement of Entitlement for RS in Church Schools. We note the right of parents to withdraw their children from RS. Further information below. We aim to provide an open curriculum which can be taught to all pupils, by all staff. All students study Religious Studies (RS) for two hours per week in Key Stage 3 and 4. The RS curriculum offers a wide range of opportunities to develop understanding and investigation of different worldviews, religious beliefs teachings and practices including those without faith.

Students are encouraged to express their opinions and to respect the opinions of others. This is central to facilitating stimulating, engaging and inspiring RS lessons. A safe environment is fostered so that students develop their own ideas about religion, community and spirituality. Students are encouraged to express their views in an environment of trust and respect which allows sensitive subject matter such as life after death, why people suffer, does God really care and issues such as divorce and abortion to be discussed in productive and thoughtful ways. At KS3, the majority of students study will engage with the Understanding Christianity resource while other religions studies will include Islam, Sikhi and Buddhism along with secular perspectives.

We begin our RS journey engaging with the concept of worldviews which continues to inform our curriculum throughout the school encouraging students to understand the denominational and cultural diversity of faith and society as a whole. The KS4 curriculum engages predominantly with Christianity and Islam looking at different beliefs teachings and practices along with key themes in the AQA A Religious Studies course.

The broad curriculum, along with the skill of a very able department, allows us to continue to develop students who are gracious, compassionate, loyal, patient, kind, forgiving and just. Students are given a wide range of different experiences and opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding in creative and more formal means. They are able to engage with key Christian and world faith themes, particularly through the Understanding Christianity. The Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award (YLA) is an important part of our RS curriculum at Key Stage 3 which helps students to put our school values into practice, in particular to serve others.

Here we learn about people of faith who have been inspired to be the change they want to see in their communities. We consider what it means to be part of a community, learning, in part, from the teachings of Saint Paul on the Body of Christ; then move on to actively serve the communities we are part of through pieces of volunteering. At the end of KS3, students will have worked towards receiving this certificated award and will have the option to take this further as a KS4 option through the Leadership Program.

Right of Withdrawal

Parents/carers do have the right to withdraw pupils from RE lessons, or any part of the RE curriculum. If you wish to do this, please make an appointment with the RE subject leader in school. HSLT does not support selective withdrawal from RE.

Our schools have a duty to supervise pupils withdrawn from RE, though not to provide additional teaching or to incur extra cost. Where the pupil has been withdrawn, alternative arrangements will be made for RE of the kind the parents/guardians want the pupil to receive. These arrangements will be made by the parents/guardians. The school is not expected to make these arrangements. This RE could be provided at the school in question, or by another school in the locality. If neither approach is practicable, the pupil may receive external RE teaching as long as the withdrawal does not significantly impact on the child’s attendance.
